Analyzing the RPI ~ Ratings Percentage Index

By: Roberto Azar  on: Thu 25 of Sep., 2014 15:51 IST  (4900 Reads)

by Jean Louis Trezeguet, Belgium - 11.27.04 ~ Updated by: Prof. Roberto Azar ~ 01.19.2010 & 09.25.2014

The RPI is usually defined as the sum of 25 percent of a team's winning percentage (WP), 50 percent of the team's opponents' winning percentage (OWP), and 25 percent of the team's Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage (OOWP). Sometimes it is described as 25 percent winning percentage and 75 percent strength of schedule, with SOS defined as 2/3 × OWP + 1/3 × OOWP.

RPI Ratings are (approximately) those used by the NCAA to determine teams and seeding for the NCAA Tournament. Anyone who has studied statistics knows that these rankings are extremely flawed, but for whatever reason, the NCAA uses them. eBA System doesn't condone them as a ranking system, just compute them.

The Basketball Assist: the Most Controversial Stat

By: Roberto Azar  on: Wed 21 of Nov., 2012 11:12 GMT  (5950 Reads)

by Prof. Roberto Azar ~ March 19, 2011 ~ Updated: September 19, 2012

Spanish ~ Español - Asistencia en Baloncesto: la Estadística más Controvertida

In my opinion, and in this manner works the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System (external link), we must be able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play. As said in a previous article, "many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket". The first pass should get some credit , because it can be more important than the second pass . On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is not generally credited as an assist, and it should be, or no?

La Asistencia en Baloncesto: la Estadística más Controvertida

By: Roberto Azar  on: Wed 21 of Nov., 2012 10:47 GMT  (8300 Reads)

por Prof. Roberto Azar ~ Marzo 19, 2011 ~ Actualizado: Noviembre 21, 2012

Inglés ~ English - The Basketball Assist: the Most Controversial Stat

By: Daniel Ferrero  on: Wed 17 of Oct., 2012 11:12 IST  (2940 Reads)

by Daniel Ferrero ~ Octubre 10, 2006 ~ Actualizado por: Roberto Azar ~ 22.12.2010 & Daniel Ferrero ~ 17.10.2012

Extra Analysis Tools about Possession and Performance Evaluation

By: jjdiaz  on: Fri 12 of Oct., 2012 00:05 IST  (6233 Reads)

by Juan José Diaz, Perú ~ September 30, 2001 ~ Updated by: Roberto Azar ~ 01.19.2010 & Lynn Crall ~ 10.12.2012

There are various formulas and means of determining and analyzing possessions: a possession starts with ba ll posse ssion and ends when the opponent gains ball posse ssion. However, most of those means were the result of trying to devise a formula to use in the past since the manually tracking the number of posse ssions was practically impossible. Computers and the eBA Basketball Stati stics Creative Analysis System (external link) have change this, so here we have all the formulas to study and eBA System of Possession Analysis.

by Daniel Ferrero - December 24, 2010 ~ Updated: Daniel Ferrero - September 30, 2012

The Concept (external link): Traveling is progressing in any direction with the ball while moving one or both feet in one direction while holding the ba ll, that's means when the player who receives the ba ll while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, exceeds in the use of a twocount rhythm in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ba ll: which is in excess of prescribed limits as noted in Rule 4 - Section VIII and Rule 10 - Section XIV.

Inglés ~ English - Pass Rating and Analysis

Have the same analysis value a close assist to a dunk than an assist for an open three pointer ? How we can get an idea of how good our players are at passing the ball which leads to a score ?

An opening statements to begin, when working with databases which are based on how often players pass the ball , you must take into account that this data doesn't qualify how good the passes are.

The Basketball Plus Minus Rating

By: Daniel Ferrero  on: Fri 02 of Jan., 2009 15:28 GMT  (6437 Reads)

In areas such as Basketball, the coach has many different statistics to deal with. Is the best player the one with the most points? The most rebounds? The most steals? In areas where there are many different types of data, it is important to convert all of the data to the same unit. Daniel Ferrero, describe these analysis rules from the eBA Basketball statistics Analysis System, when each player is given a rating, to compare him to other players and to find team ratings. What follows is one of those rules step-by-step breakdown.

This statistical method measure how point differentials change when a particular player is in game versus when he is not, evaluating how the team is performing in both situations.

By: jjdiaz  on: Fri 19 of Dec., 2008 13:32 GMT  (5677 Reads)

Basketball Statistics

By: Juán José Díaz  on: Thu 30 of Oct., 2008 17:07 GMT  (7615 Reads)

"... We tried to find out how certain basketball statistics affect winning percentage for a NCAA Division I basketball team. We used the entire NCAA division I 1999-2000 season statistics. We considered the following statistics: field goals, free throws, Personal Fouls, Turnovers, 3 Pointers, blocks, & Steals. Our conclusion is that while a rise in each stat had some affect in the rise or fall of winning percentage, we could not determine a single stat that had a direct affect on the dependent variable (Winning Percentage). ..."
