The Basketball Plus Minus Rating

In areas such as Basketball, the coach has many different statistics to deal with. Is the best player the one with the most points? The most rebounds? The most steals? In areas where there are many different types of data, it is important to convert all of the data to the same unit. Daniel Ferrero, have developed these analysis rules when each player is given a rating, to compare him to other players and to find team ratings. What follows is one of those rules step-by-step breakdown.

This statistical method measure how point differentials change when a particular player is in game versus when he is not, evaluating how the team is performing in both situations.

"... We tried to find out how certain basketball statistics affect winning percentage for a NCAA Division I basketball team. We used the entire NCAA division I 1999-2000 season statistics. We considered the following statistics: field goals, free throws, Personal Fouls, Turnovers, 3 Pointers, blocks, & Steals. Our conclusion is that while a rise in each stat had some affect in the rise or fall of winning percentage, we could not determine a single stat that had a direct affect on the dependent variable (Winning Percentage). ..."

Registro Estadistico de la Regla de los 3 Segundos

La regla establece: mientras un equipo está en control del balón, un jugador NO permanecerá en el área restringida de los oponentes por más de tres (3) segundos consecutivos. Las líneas que limitan el área restringida son parte del área restringida y un jugador tocando una de esa líneas está en el área. La restricción de los 3 segundos está en vigencia en todas las situaciones de puesta en juego del balón desde fuera del campo. El conteo se iniciara en el momento en que el jugador que realiza la puesta en juego está fuera del campo y el balón a su disposición (está en juego).

Three-seconds Rule Statistical Registration

The rule states: While his team is in control of the ball, a player shall NOT remain for more than three (3) consecutive seconds in the opponents´ restricted area. The lines bounding the restricted area are part of the restricted area and a player touching one of these lines is in the area. The 3 second restriction is in force in all out-of-bounds situations.
