Stop:
Term for a defensive event leading to a change of possession. Among traditional box score items, only defensive rebounds, steals, and blocks are used to estimate stops.

More accurate basketball (external link) methods exist, but they are not prominent because they use items not included in the traditional box score.

This number is used to calculate an individual’s defensive rating. ( Read more > Comments )

Stops are a a coordinated sequence of individual stops and assistance provided to team stops.

Individual stops are steals, blocks and defensive rebounds. Blocks and defensive rebounds are weighted against each other.

Team stops are based on the three stats mentioned, plus field goals and free throws defensed, and forced turnovers. Players get credit here based on their minutes played.

Individual and team stops are just added together.
