HAPPY DAYS !
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !

Happy 14th Birthday, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year !
The world has became different greatly because of the creation of the Web, and particularly since the eBA Stats Group was created, 14 years ago, at the same days "a baby" called Google gave its first steps alone...

To entirely enjoy this milestone, turn back the calendar to 1998, the year eBA-Stats.com got its start as a scarcely 10 pages unique website... The home computer was not in every house, and those who did were probably employing a dial-up modem. Flash animation or online video ? Pass it by !

Do you want to know what was eBA & the Internet like back in 1998 ?

The Web has completely democratized access to basketball information, products, services, applications and other coaches, players and human beings.

Before the coming the Web, we had to travel to libraries to look up information related to our beloved game.
Before the coming the Web, we had to go to bookstores to buy basketball books.
Before the coming the Web, we had to wait for someone to travel to the U.S.A. to return with NBA videos.
Before the coming the Web, we had to use travel agents to set up a trip with our basketball team.
And before the coming the Web, the best place to meet friends to speak about basketball was at the stadium or a bar.

Wow, the Internet sure moves speedy ! Luckily, here at the eBA Stats Group, we move speedier. With our cell phones these days, we can update sites, text a Tweet and respond to a Facebook fan inquiry in warp-speed ! Thanks to our modern websites feed assimilation, we've beaten every channel of media online in speedier than you can bat an eyelash.

Creativity. Big data. Changing the basketball world through our 20 websites experiences ( 4 bilingual websites, 8 in English and 8 in Spanish  ). That’s the eBA Stats Group we know up-to-date, and today, we are proud to celebrate our 14th Anniversary on the Web.

The history of the eBA Stats Group
( from that lonely only-10-pages website until our 20 websites today ) is well-documented in this anniversary editorial, including your visit to our eBA Portal and 'our old sweet home' corner ( on the right menu at the bottom... ).

In conclusion, WE DON’T FEEL ARROGANT AT ALL IN WISHING OURSELVES
A HAPPY 14th YEAR ANNIVERSARY… AFTER ALL, THAT’S LIKE 69 IN INTERNET YEARS !

eBA Stats Group  wishes to everybody,
our publishers, editors and registered members,
our friends coaches participants in the courses and clinics,
our advertisers and sponsors, our readers and thousands of daily guests,
our families, colleagues and personal friends...

( ¿ ... do you want to read it in all the languages spoken
in our basketball statisticians community ... ? )

...in the the frame of mind of 14 candles then...

A  Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !
May the season bring you joy and good cheer!

FROM THE "eBA SYSTEM CLINIC"
from the eBA Annual Clinic Last 2012 Meeting:

Selected Excerpts from the eBA Clinic Discussions

About Basketball Scouters & Statisticians

"... For the past recent years, the scouting and statistics communities have feuded like members of rival families. Basketball scouters who evaluate players with their eyes are treated with contempt and the numbers-oriented people are cast as cold, computer-wielding propeller-heads with no appreciation for scouting intangibles.

Not surprisingly, the camps have grown so polarized that they have retreated to their respective bunkers rather than engage in open and intelligent debate. Instead of gathering longtime scouts and statistics experts to discuss all the great issues in this arena. ..."

"... It is correct that we have coaches that "are not stat guys", that only trust what they see, and they think they don't need a bunch of numbers to get in the way. Others, use stats in various ways and are many which can speak about a tendex type formula.
Most of us, being in the basketball statistics analysis theme, and specially the analysis area, begin to understand that basketball is a difficult game to quantify, in some degree because of the way the game changes through time, and partially because of the powerful impact of teamwork, with the constant moving interaction of 12 players and the ball.
We are the same people which understand that at some level, we use the available information to better understand the game: no one stat can explain everything, so the combination of the numbers and the plays appreciation, eBA statistics analysis basis, is by this time the correct way. ..."

"... Basketball rates player's defense very badly meanwhile baseball, relatively, has multiple manners in this area. A basketball player may get a lot of blocks and simultaneously be a bad defender. On the other hand, another player may be an excellent man-to-man defender and at the same time don't get a lot of steals.
A broad set of statistical methods can say us that the player A is better than the player B on offense, but they can't give us definitive elements about those players defensively. Only a good game analyst scouting professional can perform it.

Now, we know that basketball has a lot of difficult areas of quantitative information when we translate a game into statistics. For example, categories as "allowed points - from 2, 3 and PF bonus"; "offensive rebounds allowed"; "turnovers - that aren't steals" and "good and bad personal fouls" - see our complete list of statistical analysis categories here, which are included in the 'eBA System - The Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis', are not accounted in the traditional statistical methods, specially those made at live game time.

Gathering and analyzing those categories of data will give us a sort of information, for example, about how many unguarded shots - no fastbreaks plays - were taken by the opponents, and how many were allowed to us. This kind of info is the correct way in evaluating defense.

Basketball Statistics Case Studies

Last Month Case Study Conclusion:

About Basketball Rebounds Statistics Tracking Case Study

" ... A2 shoots and the shot is blocked by B5.

1. B3 gains control of the blocked shot;

2. A1 gains control of the blocked shot;

3. A1 and B3 retrieve the ball simultaneously and a held ball is called; or

4. the ball goes out of bounds before either team gains control.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ..."

Conclusion:

• Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should be credited with a rebound only if the player earned that rebound before the ball was dead. What happened after the ball became dead and what would have happened had the ball not become dead might be different.

• eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

The statistician should not attempt to decide what would have happened, but should decide only what did happen. However, if there is doubt about player control, the statistician may assume that there was control.

• eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In 1., the statistician must determine which was most substantial, the block by B5 or the battle of B3 to recover the blocked shot.

If the statistician feels that the block by B5 was most substantial, credit B5 with an UNDER BASKET ( from right or left ? ) CLOSE and DISPUTED individual rebound FROM 2 POINTS in the BLOCK SHOTS category and credit B5 with a BLOCKED SHOT with ball possession.

If the statistician feels that the battle of B3 was most substantial, credit B3 with the UNDISPUTED individual rebound FROM 2 POINTS.

In 2., credit A1 with an UNDISPUTED individual rebound FROM 2 POINTS.
Credit B5 with a BLOCKED SHOT without ball possession.

In 3., if Team A is awarded the ball for a throw-in, credit A1 with an DISPUTED individual rebound FROM 2 POINTS in the HELD BALL with alternated-possession-rule.

If Team B is awarded the ball for a throw-in, credit either B5 or B3 with an individual rebound FROM 2 POINTS in the HELD BALL with alternated-possession-rule.

Credit B5 with a BLOCKED SHOT without ball possession.

In 4., credit a UNDISPUTED TEAM REBOUND to the team awarded the ball for the throw-in.
Credit B5 with a BLOCKED SHOT without ball possession.
