FROM THE "eBA SYSTEM CLINIC"
from the eBA Permanent Clinic Last Month Meetings:

About Basketball Stats, Methods and Players

"... About Statistics & Methods: There is a general interpreted sensation that statistical knowledge is many times incorrectly used with intention, by finding ways to translate information from the observation that are favorably disposed to the presenter.

A famous quote, included in our front page,  from former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli is  "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

In truth , the well-known book How to Lie With Statistics How to Lie With Statistics by Darrell Huff identify many cases of deceptive uses of statistics, concentrating on graphs designed to deceive  either deliberately .

By choosing (or rejecting, or modifying) a certain sample, results can be manipulated; throwing out  bad data values or local anomalies is one means of doing so ( eliminating one or more low performance games of a certain player from his season balance, is a known example ).

This may be the result of without restrictions fraud or of complex, balanced and unintentional bias on the part of the statistician.

Do you know the case of that point guard that at home plays, with the locals guys at the computers, had 11.1 assists per game... meanwhile on the road he served only 3.2.....?

"... About Statistics & Players: The stats of a player candidate to enroll a team are certainly important, but they're not everything.
David Friedman wisely said in our eBA Blogs that 'economics is not a science, nor is basketball statistical analysis' !

Numbers certainly played a role, but they can't be the determining factor in the decision. These are just some questions to see on the candidates out of their numbers:

- look at his importance to their team, the leadership ability.
- a leader, someone who could also defend, score and make everyone around him better.
- a guy who has courage, so that the guys who are following him know he won't back down.
- a good penetrator and/or a good rebounder, plays good defense and obsessed with winning. ..."

"... About the Statistician and the Head Coach: Meanwhile statistics may provide a road map, the coach during the game have to have the feel of the game.

Statistician's numbers can help the coach understand what's going on, but during the game the coach is alone in front of the court.

In basketball, no one is alone at home plate as in baseball, isolated against an opponent again and again like the batter-pitcher matchup.

A basketball player's shots vary in degree of difficulty based on his teammates' ability and willingness to set him up with a pass.

The statistician tries to measure those things by focusing on efficiency, both by a team and an individual.

How often does a certain player make good things happen when he touches the ball ?

How often does he keep bad things from happening on defense?

Who gets better the more shots he takes? Who gets worse?

Those are only some of the questions the statistician takes a scientist's approach to answering, subject on which this course tries to resolve in the first level. ..."

Basketball Statistics Case Studies

Last Month Case Study Conclusion:

About Basketball Assists Statistics Tracking Case Study

"... A1 passes to A3, who is about 6 m. from the basket. A3 immediately shoots and scores.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the tracking ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ..."

Conclusion:

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver.
It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass.

There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited. Nevertheless, the eBA System register both factors: distance of the assist and type of shot assisted made.

Although, an assist should be 'made'. 'missed' or 'potential' according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, when also are tracked the 'long assists', 'short assists', '2 or 3 points assists', 'assists on foul' and 'assists on/to the paint area'.

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A player is credited with an assist when the player makes, in the judgment of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal (or an awarded score of two or three points). Only one assist is to be credited on any field goal and only when the pass was a major part of the play.

That said, the 'second assist concept' (as in hockey) is integral part of our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ! The same player cannot be credited with an assist and a field goal made on the same possession.

Such a pass should be either
(a) a pass that finds a player free after he or she has maneuvered without the ball for a positional advantage, or
(b) a pass that gives the receiving player a positional advantage he or she otherwise would not have had.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

This probably is the toughest decision involving basketball assists.

• If A1 found A3 unguarded, A1 probably should get the assist.

• If the statistician feels that the ball merely was being passed around in hopes of finding a way to penetrate the defense and A3 merely decided to shoot, then no assist should be credited.

• The statistician must decide to credit a POTENTIAL ASSIST to A1 if he was in good shooting position and A3 misses the shot !

This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day in even months, on June 15th, 2013 ( before our vacations ! ) in our eBA Portal: were sent 1,098 answers, 329 partial answers and 602 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.
