FROM THE "eBA SYSTEM CLINIC"
from the eBA Permanent Clinic 2012 1st. Month Meetings:

About the Statistics Box Score Balance Errors

"... a properly completed box score should be balanced.

To make this determination, the statistician should add the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams.

This number should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.

What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ?

A better balance can be achieved if rebounds are kept according to whether they are 'offensive' or 'defensive' rebounds.

This must include both team and dead-ball rebounds. In this case, the sum of Team A’s offensive rebounds and Team B’s defensive rebounds must equal the total number of missed shots by Team A.

Also, the sum of Team B’s offensive rebounds and Team A’s defensive rebounds must equal the number of missed shots by Team B.

Neither check guarantees that there are no mistakes, but they do indicate that mistakes are unlikely. If the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found, the eBA System propose the following steps which may help:

1.- Check the dead-ball rebounds. Look at the number of two-shot fouls where the first FTA was missed.

2.- Check the team rebounds. Think about whether either team was awarded the ball for a throw-in when the ball went out of bounds after a shot.

3.- If you are working with live stats, if there was a feeling during the game that an individual should have been credited with another rebound, see if that will help. With the eBA System of Post Game Video Analysis, you'll have not this problem.

4.- Go back and decide whether another dead-ball rebound should be added.

5.- If the feeling is that the error is in the individual or team rebounds but there is no idea about which one or about which player, consider adjusting the team rebounds.

These suggestions are good if you are working with live stats and also can be used if there are too many rebounds.

And look for perfection, as we work with our eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System. ..."

Basketball Statistics Case Studies

This Month Case Study Conclusion:

'When an Assist is Awarded ?' Case Study

"... A1 passes to A4 in a situation that normally would warrant an assist but does not produce a field goal because ...

(a) there is defensive goaltending or defensive basket interference;
(b) A4 is fouled in the act of shooting; or
(c) A4 travels, fumbles the pass out of bounds or has the shot blocked.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ..."

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A player is credited with an assist when the player makes, in the judgment of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal (or an awarded score of two or three points). Only one assist is to be credited on any field goal and only when the pass was a major part of the play. That said, the 'second assist concept' (as in hockey) is integral part of our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System ! The same player cannot be credited with an assist and a field goal made on the same possession.

Such a pass, as a major part of the play, should be either:
(a) a pass that finds a player free after he or she has maneuvered without the ball for a positional advantage, or
(b) a pass that gives the receiving player a positional advantage he or she otherwise would not have had.

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver.
It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass.
There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited.
Although, an assist should be 'made'. 'missed' or 'potential' according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, when also are tracked the 'long assists', 'short assists', '2 or 3 points assists', 'assists on foul' and 'assists on/to the paint area'.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

• In (a), there will be an awarded score, so credit A1 with a made assist.
• In (b), credit A1 with a made assist on foul if A4 makes any of the free throws.
• In (b), if A4 misses all the free throws, charge A1 with a missed assist on foul.
• In (c), no assist will be credited and A4 is charged with an unforced turnover.

This Case Study was presented as every 1st. day of each month, on March 1st, 2012 in our eBA Portal: were sent 438 answers, 24 partial answers and 391 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.
