FROM THE "eBA SYSTEM CLINIC"
from the eBA Permanent Clinic 1st. Month Meetings:

About Two Assists in the SAME Basketball Play

"... Another obvious element is that the assists metric is somewhat dependent on how often a team made three-pointers, because the circumstantial numerical evidence that so many three-pointers are assisted.

It is not surprising at all that three-pointers tend to get more assists, having a portion of two-pointers which are "un-assistable", the result of put-backs and tip-ins, while few threes are shot off of the dribble.

Another evidence in our assist analysis maybe a good shooting team that doesn't score often on put-backs, so there were more two-point assist opportunities.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, is able to give two assists - like in hockey - on one play. Many times, a point guard gives a great pass, and another player makes a pass that leads to the basket.
The first pass gets a credit in the game analysis chapter - no at the stats numbers ! -, because it can be more important than the second pass.
On the other hand, a great pass that leads to the shooter being fouled is credited as an assist.

In the case of free throws, eBA System register the assist if the fouled player makes both (or the three) throws or one of them.
But in this case, in our rate we give the assist a qualification of one point for each free throw made.

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:
An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free. There should not be a limit on the number of dribbles by the receiver. It is not even necessary that the assist be given on the last pass.

There is no restraint on the distance or type of shot made, for these are not the crucial factors in determining whether an assist should be credited. Nevertheless, the eBA System records both factors: distance of the assist and type of shot assisted made.

Although, an assist should be
• 'made'.
• 'missed' or
• 'potential'
according to our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System, when also are tracked the
• 'long assists',
• 'short assists',
• '2 or 3 points assists',
• 'assists on foul' and
• 'assists on/to the paint area',
• 'defensive assists',
• 'missed assists',
• 'potential assists',
• 'assists in paint',
• 'assists outside of paint',
• 'within each',
• 'assists leading to jump shots',
• 'assists leading to layups',
• 'assists leading to foul shots', and
• within each of these, are they 'part of fast break or not'.

About the Potential Assist:
For the passer only counts as a possession if the shot goes into the basket. Had the passer shot the ball himself, it would counts in the direction of possession usage, careless of whether the shot went in.

But when he passes it off to a teammate, the stats record this possession for him as an assist only if the shot goes in: so, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records for this passer a "potential assist" at the game analysis chapter. ..."

Basketball Statistics Case Studies

Last Bimester Case Study Conclusion:

About Basketball Field Goals Tracking Case Study

"... As the shot clock is about to expire, A1 ...

1.- throws a bad pass;
2.- throws a pass that B5 tips;
3.- throws a good pass that A3 mishandles or
4.- has the ball stripped away.

In all cases, A3 recovers the loose ball and shoots a desperation shot that misses the rim as the shot-clock horn sounds. The ball is awarded to Team B for a throw-in.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ..."

Conclusion:

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or opponents, unless the shot results in a FGM.

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A field-goal attempt (FGA) is charged to a player any time the player shoots, throws or taps a live ball at his own basket, when, in the opinion of the statistician, the player is attempting to score a goal.

A field goal made (FGM) is credited to a player any time a FGA by the player results in the goal being counted or results in an awarded score of two (or three) points except when the field goal is the result of a defensive player tipping the ball in the offensive basket.

If the statistician is in doubt about whether a shooting foul is a player-control foul, the actions of the officials will indicate the correct ruling. If the foul is a player-control foul, it will be so indicated by the officials and any shot will be waved of.

The statistician must records each shot related to:

- the game situation ( time and score )
- ball location ( sideline or endline )
- player location ( location of shot in our 15 zones basketball court diagram )
- type of shot ( shot selection )
- shooting clock ( seconds remaining )
- shot result ( made or missed ) and offensive and defensive alignments.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In all cases, do not charge A3 with a FGA.

In 1.-, 2.- and 4.-, charge A1 with a FORCED or an UNFORCED TURNOVER. depending upon the defenders actions.

In 3.-, charge A3 with a FORCED or an UNFORCED TURNOVER. depending upon A3's defender action.
